The Staggering, Unexpected Legacy

The doctor certified the time of death. Sarah broke down, a gut-wrenching wail that released all the pent-up tension. David held her, his own pain mirrored in his eyes. Emily clung to her mother, frightened by the intensity of her grief.

But Olivia’s departure, cold and silent, left an open wound, deeper even than Grandpa Robert’s death.

What had she said? What words could provoke such a reaction in a dying man?

The question hung in the air, a haunting ghost in the now desolate room.

The following days were a whirlwind of arrangements and funerals. Olivia attended, but maintained the same icy distance. She spoke to no one, accepted no comfort. She was like a statue, present but absent.

Sarah felt torn between anger and deep sadness. Olivia’s attitude was incomprehensible, even cruel.

“What did Dad do to you to treat him like that in his last moments?” Sarah asked one day, her voice breaking, unable to hold back any longer. They were in her father’s garden, gathered after the burial.

Olivia looked at her, her dark eyes devoid of emotion.

“You don’t understand, Sarah,” Olivia replied, her voice a barely audible whisper, stripped of any warmth.

“What don’t I understand? That our father loved you and you despised him until the very end?” Sarah retorted, tears welling up again.

Olivia just shook her head and walked away, leaving Sarah with her frustration and a sharp pain.

A week after the funeral, Grandpa Robert’s lawyer, Mr. Jenkins, called the family for the reading of the will. The meeting took place in Grandpa Robert’s study, a room filled with memories, smelling of old books and the pipe tobacco he used to smoke.

Sarah, David, and Emily were there. Olivia was too. She sat in the farthest chair, as if wanting to separate herself even from the legal process.

Mr. Jenkins, a middle-aged man with thin glasses and a serious demeanor, opened a leather folder.

“Mr. Robert left clear instructions regarding his last wishes,” he began, his voice echoing in the expectant silence.

The first clauses were as expected: the family home to Sarah, some investments for Emily, minor bequests to charities. Everything seemed normal, predictable.

But then, Mr. Jenkins paused, adjusting his glasses. His gaze briefly landed on Olivia.

“There is an additional clause, dictated and signed by Mr. Robert just hours before his passing. A last-minute modification.”

Sarah and David exchanged surprised glances. A modification? What could it be?

The lawyer cleared his throat. “Mr. Robert bequeathed the entirety of his shares in ‘Horizon Builders’ to his daughter, Olivia Vargas.”

A chill ran through the room.

Sarah gasped. David straightened in his seat, incredulous.

Horizon Builders was the heart of Grandpa Robert’s empire, his largest asset, the engine of the entire family fortune. It was worth millions.

Olivia, for her part, showed no reaction. Her face remained impassive, a mask of stone.

“But… how is that possible?” Sarah stammered, her voice barely a whisper. “The entirety? That’s almost everything he had!”

Mr. Jenkins raised a hand. “Mr. Robert also left a letter. Exclusively for Olivia.”

He pulled out a thick envelope, sealed with wax. He handed it to Olivia.

Olivia took the envelope with a steady hand. She opened it calmly, her movements precise. She unfolded the old sheets of paper inside.

As she read, a fleeting emotion, almost imperceptible, crossed her face. It wasn’t sadness, nor joy. It was something more complex, a mix of pain, confirmation, and cold resolution.

When she finished, she carefully folded the letter and put it in her purse.

“What does it say, Olivia?” Sarah asked, desperate to understand. “This is crazy! Why would Dad do this?”

Olivia finally looked up. Her eyes met Sarah’s, and for the first time, there was a glint in them. A glint of a truth that had waited too long to come to light.

“It tells the truth, Sarah,” Olivia replied, her voice now stronger, clearer, resonating with unexpected authority. “It tells the truth of why Mom died with a broken heart. It tells the truth of why I lost everything ten years ago. And it tells the truth of why Dad, in the end, tried to make things right.”

Sarah recoiled, her mind trying to process the magnitude of her sister’s words. What truth was she talking about? What did their mother, who had passed years ago, have to do with any of this?

Olivia stood up. “There’s something else Mr. Jenkins hasn’t read, isn’t there?” she said, looking directly at the lawyer.

Mr. Jenkins paled slightly. “Miss Olivia, there is an appendix to the main will, but Mr. Robert specified it should only be revealed if you deemed it appropriate.”

“It is appropriate,” Olivia affirmed, her voice firm. “Read it.”
